Big news for YouTube Shorts creators!

Starting today, October 15, YouTube has officially extended the maximum length of Shorts videos from 60 seconds to a generous 3 minutes.

This enhancement aims to enrich storytelling capabilities on the platform, making it easier for creators to engage their audiences with more detailed narratives.

Todd Sherman, YouTube Shorts’ director of product management, emphasized that this feature was highly requested by the creator community, saying:

“We’re excited to provide more flexibility to help you tell your story.”

This move mirrors TikTok’s earlier expansion, which increased its video length in 2021.

The new 3-minute limit applies only to vertical or square videos uploaded after today, while existing Shorts will remain unchanged. YouTube is also enhancing its recommendation system for longer Shorts, promising improvements in the coming months.

For those who prefer fewer Shorts in their feed, YouTube is rolling out a new option that allows users to select “Show Fewer Shorts” from the menu, giving them control over their viewing experience.

In addition to these updates, YouTube Shorts is introducing a revamped player design to ensure creators’ content shines, alongside a new trends page for discovering popular Shorts in your region. Creators will soon have the ability to preview comments directly in the Shorts feed, streamlining viewer interaction.

To help creators capitalize on current trends, YouTube Shorts is launching templates that allow them to remix content easily. By tapping “Remix” on a Short, users can access these templates and add their unique spin to popular sounds and clips.

Later this year, YouTube will integrate Google DeepMind’s Veo generative AI video model into Shorts, enabling creators to enhance their videos with stunning backgrounds and clips.

With over 2 billion logged-in users engaging with YouTube Shorts each month, up from 1.5 billion just a year ago, this update marks a significant step in YouTube’s ongoing commitment to evolving its platform and supporting creators.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates!
